Background:
Dana has always been a “runner” – from the age of 6 trying to jog around the neighborhood block with Dad, to holding the 800-meter track and the 3.1 mile cross-country distance course records at Trinity High School for 5 and 7 years respectively.  She was a lettered member of the Appalachian State University Cross Country and Indoor and Outdoor Women’s Track teams from 1985 to 1989.  After moving from North Carolina to Atlanta in 1991 to pursue an accounting career, there were only sporadic and recreational running beginnings and ends….  Dana began her return to long distance running, during divorce, in January of 1999.  She joined Team Spirit, a fundraising group, for their 1999 Fall Marathon Training season. Running that first marathon transformed her life and Dana’s passion for running continued to grow.  During 2002 she wanted more involvement but realized she had topped out within the Team Spirit organization.  “I don’t believe in coincidences, and before I knew what I was doing, the beginnings of Get Fit Atlanta were realized.”  Dana’s love and passion for running – the physical, mental and spiritual benefits it provides – resulted in the formation of Get Fit Atlanta in 2003.  GFA has evolved into full and half marathon, 10k, and sprint to Ironman distance triathlon, training programs for individuals of all abilities.

As owner and founder of Silver Comet Races, Dana has been the organizer and race director of the eleven Silver Comet 10k Races and the eight Silver Comet Half Marathons.  Both races had over 1500 participants in 2008, the half marathon sold out in September 2008 and continue to grow each year.

Dana regularly participates in local favorite 5k and 10k races, often claiming an age division award.  She has run 15 of the last 16 Peachtree Road Races – only sitting out nine months pregnant in 1995.  Her favorite local races are the Labor Day US10K Classic and the Atlanta Ekiden Marathon Relay held in September. Dana has qualified for the Boston Marathon in all but one of her marathons.

For over 6 years, Dana cycled for cross training, so beginning triathlon training was the next logical step.  She reluctantly completed her first triathlon not knowing how to swim very well in 2006 and was imprudently convinced to train for a Full Ironman during the 2007 season.  An exhausting endeavor; but tenaciousness, sometimes 20 extra hours of sleep a week,  and smart training carried her across the finish line of the Florida Ironman in November 2007.   Now an experienced triathlete, Dana hopes to teach safe and healthy progression through the triathlon distances to those interested in the multi-sport lifestyle!  She continues to expand her commitment to physical fitness and her overall health and well being by learning / participating in new forms of exercise during the off-season.  This winter she became Spinning™ certified and started teaching spin classes; she obtained her personal trainer certification from the American College of Sports Medicine and her Level III Coaching certification from USA Cycling.  Dana is committed to continuing her education in health, fitness, nutrition and coaching.  She has several professional coaches in Atlanta as mentors.

Vision:
Dana’s vision for Get Fit Atlanta is to share the FUN, the life changing camaraderie, growth and satisfaction of making the personal commitment to train for a full or half marathon and/or triathlon and accomplishing that goal – one step at a time!  Dana assures that Get Fit Atlanta will be an inspiring, fun, non-intimidating and welcoming group – with no fund raising requirements – open to walkers and runners of all different fitness levels – who want to challenge themselves and change their lives!  Dana believes that she is a facilitator; a facilitator of personal growth and achievement, and a facilitator of relationships with other athletes.  “The human spirit is amazing – We all have power within our selves to do amazing things.  Sometimes we need someone else to believe that for us until we discover it for ourselves.  I want to be that person for the people I train.”
